Backstory of Crackled Glass: Crackle glass also is known as "Craquelle glass" and "ice glass." In France, crackle glass is called "broc a glaces," and in Italy "vetro a ghiaccio" or "vetro corroso."
Crackle glass is made by plunging hot glass into cold water to create fine cracks. The glass is reheated and blown by hand or placed into a mold to seal the cracks. The Venetians developed the crackle glass technique in the 16th century. Crackle glass gained in popularity throughout the 19th century. From the late 1920s through the early 1960s, crackle glass was made in bold, vibrant colors. It became quite popular in the two decades following World War II.
